Rentals of equipment in the United States are expected to exceed $38 billion in 2013 says the most recent quarterly forecast of the American Rental Association (ARA). The report projects that equipment rental growth compared to 2012 will reach 7.9 percent by the fourth quarter of 2013.

Many involved in various construction markets continue to search for signs that the recession is truly nearing an end and better times are close at hand.

It’s a puzzle with a lot of pieces that can be challenging to put together into a crystal clear picture: To rent, buy or rent and then convert that rental into a purchase?

The newest inductee for the Rental Hall of Fame is the late Herschel “Hotch” Manning. He will be formally inducted on Feb. 28 at The Rental Show in Las Vegas.

The Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the leading organization focused on protecting underground utility lines and the safety of people who dig near them, announced a national partnership with United Rentals, the largest equipment rental company in the world.

Projects requiring excavation are recognized as among the most dangerous in construction, and protecting personnel who must work in trenches and surrounding areas from cave-ins is a priority with life and death implications.

For small jobs, trench protection may be as simple as dropping a trench box into the excavation. Larger jobs are more complex. A major project often requires extensive engineering and the use of specialized shielding and shoring.

Drive past most any construction site, and there’s a good chance many of the machines working there are rented, clearly marked by decals of the rental company that owns them. Most construction specialty niches rent equipment, including utility providers and contractors engaged in underground utility construction.

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers will conduct its annual six-day unreserved public auction at its Orlando, Fla., permanent auction site from February 15 - 20, 2010. A week prior, Ritchie Bros. also will be conducting a live benefit auction on Feb. 8 at The Rental Show with all proceeds from the sale benefiting the ARA Foundation.
