With the advent of new construction technologies comes the need for proven field tests to advance their use. Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) using ductile iron pipe, first introduced in 1994, is a method of installing the pipe underground without digging a trench.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reviewing a draft of a proposed Standard Specification for Horizontal Directional Drilling which would ensure quality trenchless installations of underground pipelines and conduits.

The American Bottom, or Bottoms, is a Southern Illinois area of 175-square miles in the flood plain of the Mississippi River, protected from flooding by a system of levees and canals. The cities in the American Bottom, such as Granite City, IL (population 30,000), have to contend with seasonally high, fluctuating groundwater, which can have a disastrous effect on underground facilities like sewers.

The November elections are over and the nation has survived. But the question remains: when will the much ballyhooed economic recovery begin in earnest? It looks like 2013 is going to be another interesting and challenging year in which the underground infrastructure market must endeavor to persevere. And we will.

In 2013, the RehabZone will be an integral part of the annual Underground Construction Technology International Conference & Exhibition (UCT) to be held Jan. 29-31 in Houston, TX.

On June 28, a sinkhole appeared on 92nd Street near Third Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. The sinkhole, west of the sidewalk, caused 11 families to be evacuated from the nearby Bay Ridge apartment building. The block of 92nd Street between Third Avenue and Ridge Boulevard was closed to traffic as emergency crews from the city’s Department of Environmental Protection inspected the sinkhole. Crews worked to stabilize the 70-foot deep sinkhole and began planning a repair.
