In Memoriam
Robert (Rob) Allen McKim, Ph.D., passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep at the age of 58 on March 21.
McKim was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, on May 11, 1955.
Dr. McKim graduated high school in St. John’s and received his college degree from Memorial University and later moved on to the University of Waterloo to get his MSc. He worked for several years in the oil industry in both Canada and the United States and later returned to the University of Waterloo to obtain his doctorate.
He taught civil engineering in several universities including University of New Brunswick, Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Waterloo, Western Kentucky University and Louisiana Tech University. At the time of his passing, Dr. McKim served as the Trenchless Technology Center’s administrative director at Louisiana Tech University.
In the 1990s, Dr. McKim began to turn his attention to the serious deterioration of our underground infrastructures. He conducted cutting edge research into rehabilitation strategies and was regarded as an expert in the field of trenchless technologies.
Dr. McKim is predeceased by his parents, Rev. John Arthur and Eleanor McKim. He is survived by his wife Lynda, daughter Jennifer (fiancé Ray), step-sons Matthew Stover and Adam Stover (Andrea) and grandchildren Ethan and Allie. He is also survived by two brothers, John and Bill (Edna); a sister, Mary (Nancy); and several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service was held for Dr. McKim in Bowling Green, KY, at the Unitarian Universalist Church on March 29. His ashes will be scattered off Cape Spear in June.

Charles R. Howland, 76, died March 30. Howland worked for many years at Joyce Western Corporation. During this time, he became one of the country’s leading experts on the hydrostatic testing of pipelines and initiated many technical procedures still in use today. Howland eventually became vice president of Joyce Corp. In 1990, he joined Otis Eastern Service Inc., where he served as general superintendent and chief estimator.
His wife, Sandra, predeceased him. His two daughters, Lisa (Mark) McCraith and Linda (Tim) Lehman and five grandchildren survive him.
