HDD Rigs: Equipment Spotlight

Vermeer
The new Vermeer D9x13 Series II Navigator horizontal directional drill has 300 feet of onboard rod carrying capacity, allowing for the completion of long distance bores. An expandable track feature increases the working width of the machine for helping to increase side-hill stability. Several user-friendly operators’ station features are included such as dual joysticks and a digital display screen with drilling fluid volume recorder and rod cycle counter. The customer can choose either a 9 gpm or 15 gpm onboard drilling fluid pump. The D9x13 Series II is powered by a 47 hp Kubota turbocharged diesel engine that produces 9,000 pounds of thrust/pullback and 1,300 foot-pounds of torque. 888.837.6337, www.vermeer.com

TT Technologies

The compact Grundodrill 4X is designed for residential service, small diameter main installations, last mile operations and gas pipeline applications, offering 9,800 pounds of thrust and pullback. Using the compact drill is less intrusive and ideal for areas where larger units are not an option. The drill features a dual hydrostatic pump system and a four-auger stake down system that provides greater stability. The Grundodrill 4X also comes with the exclusive Smart Vice system that performs vice cycling operations automatically. 800.533.2078, www.tttechnologies.com

Ditch Witch

The Ditch Witch JT3020 All Terrain features a patented dual-drive pipe system that enables the machine to simultaneously steer and penetrate the soil. The inner pipe of the JT3020 All Terrain’s two-pipe drill string continuously turns the drill bit at 150 to 400 RPM, depending on the soil, resulting in exceptionally efficient boring. The JT3020 All Terrain can steer, drill and backream up to 650 feet in all types of soils, including solid rock. 800.654.6481, www.ditchwitch.com

Astec Underground

The Astec EarthPro Series DD-65 MiniMax horizontal directional drill is small enough to work among obstacles in existing landscapes or in tight work areas such as against walls or buildings. This unit offers 6,000 pounds of thrust/pullback force and is capable of up to 500 foot-pounds of rotary torque, with a maximum rotary speed of 180 rpm. It weighs 2,600 pounds for minimum impact on turf and existing landscape. The patented Es!Lok system is integrated into the drill controls. An emergency shut down switch is located at the driller’s console. Powered by a 26-hp Caterpillar C1.1 diesel engine, the DD-65 has an onboard duplex mud pump that can pump 5 gpm at 650 psi. This unit uses 5-foot drill stem with an O.D. of 1.75 inches and can carry up to 150 feet of pipe. 800.527.6020, www.astecunderground.com
Central Mine Equipment

The CME-50DD is a mid-size machine that provides more than 50,000 pounds of thrust and over 9,000 foot-pounds of rotary torque. Features include all hydraulic controls, dual range thrust and rotation, floating carriage, patent pending open top heavy-duty vise and radio control tramming system. Efficient for both large and small diameter pipe installations, there are no chains that can stretch or break. And since the drill rod is on the same centerline as the rack and pinions, there is less stress on drill rods, the carriage and other components. 800.325.8827, www.cmeco.com

American Augers
The DD-6 self-contained horizontal directional drilling system provides 60,000 pounds of maximum thrust/pullback power, and 10,000 foot-pounds of maximum rotary torque. The unit is equipped with a four drive, rack and pinion carriage system with adjustable force limiter, 2-inch fluid course for increased down hole hydraulic power, and rig mounted crane with a lifting rate of 6,000 pounds. The DD-6 operates with C-6.6 Caterpillar diesel Tier III engine, and is rated at 174 hp. Design features include: Pipe Hog open-top wrench, self-propelled rubber tracks and 315 feet of working drill pipe capability. Barbco now offers directional drills in 60,000, 100,000, 120,000, 250,000, 500,000, and 750,000 pound push/pull on tracks. Maxi rigs are also available on a trailer up to one million pounds. Barbco also will customize directional drills to suite your needs. 800.448.8934, www.barbco.com

Universal HDD
 width=
The UNI 10×15 is the most compact powerful drill in its class. Walk it through a 36-inch gate into rear easement or set it up for a tight road crossing. The rig has a 64 hp Duetz air cooled Tier II Diesel Engine, 10,000 pounds of thrust/pullback and a true 1,500 foot/pounds of rotation torque produced from the exclusive Rineer Vane Pump Rotation Motor. The UNI 10×15 will make those difficult hard road crossings while utilizing the Kerr 20 gpm mud pump. 847.955.0050, www.unihdd.com

Gallagher Engineering
Gallagher designs horizontal directional drills from the HDD 200, HDD400 to the HDD600. The HDD200/400 provides a maximum thrust/pullback force of 200,000 pounds that can be upgraded to 400,000 pounds. The machine is powered by a 600-hp Cummins engine which drives two 250cc Sunstrand closed loop pumps – one for push/pull and one for rotary. At the rear of one pump there is a 56cc open circuit pump which drives all of the auxiliary items. On the rotary drive, 45,000 foot-pounds of torque is reached at 33 rpm. User-friendly drills give the operator the ability to pre-set pressures in all the necessary areas to help prevent costly mistakes through events such as break offs. +61-7-5537 2811, www.directionaldrilling.com.au
